PROGRAM OVERVIEW

One case. Three weeks. Every skill a first-year law student needs.

Most pre-law students arrive at the application having never briefed a case, written a legal memo, or argued a point of law out loud. There is no clinical pathway for law the way there is for medicine, so most applicants show up with grades, a test score, and an essay about wanting to make a difference.

This program was built to close that gap. Over three weeks in Cape Town, you will learn the foundational skills of the first year of law school: case reading, briefing, legal reasoning, issue-spotting, legal writing and oral advocacy, and practise every one of them on a single real case that runs the length of the program and ends in a moot before practising advocates.

The core 1L skill set, learned before your classmates meet it.
A portfolio of real legal writing for interviews and applications.
An argued moot, an experience most students will not have until their second year of law school.
Strong foundations for letters of recommendation.
A personal statement grounded in something specific.

This is for students who want to find out what being a lawyer actually feels like, before they commit three years and six figures to it.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

Three weeks. Three ways of seeing the law.

South Africa has one of the most admired constitutions in the world, and one of the widest gaps between the rights on the page and the reality on the ground. That distance, between law as written and law as lived, is the lens for everything you will do here. Each week examines it from a different side of the profession: three teaching days, two field days, one skill mastered at a time.

WEEK 1

Constitutional & human rights law.

Law as the architecture of a nation.
YOU'LL EXPLORE

How a written constitution actually reshapes a society, and where it can't.

Socio-economic rights: housing, education, healthcare as legal claims.

How public-interest cases are brought, funded, and won.

FIELD DAYS

A contested housing site, with the litigators fighting the case.

Robben Island, from a prison cell to a constitution.

YOUR OUTPUT

A written brief and legal analysis of a real constitutional judgment.

WEEK 2

Commercial & corporate law.

Law as the engine of an economy.
YOU'LL EXPLORE

The anatomy of a deal: term sheet to signature.

Where the money hides: risk, warranties, and the quiet clauses.

How AI is rewriting the work of junior lawyers.

FIELD DAYS

A full day inside a leading pan-African commercial firm.

A live deal simulation: negotiate, draft and sign, coached by transactional lawyers.

YOUR OUTPUT

A predictive legal memo, the writing form law schools value most.

WEEK 3

Justice, political economy & the future.

Law as it is actually lived.
YOU'LL EXPLORE

One country, two legal orders: customary law and the courts.

The criminal-justice pipeline, observed up close.

What punishment is for, and whether it works.

FIELD DAYS

A full day in a township magistrate's court.

Practitioners working inside the detention and rehabilitation system.

YOUR OUTPUT

A persuasive written submission, and the moot itself.

WHO IT'S FOR

Designed for students serious about law school.

Undergraduate students who are:
Considering JD pathways, from any major.
Political science, philosophy, history, economics, English, or none of the above.
Strong writers who want to become legal writers.
Curious about which kind of lawyer they'd actually be.
Wanting to strengthen their law school application.
Ready to test the decision before committing to it.
Ideal for students seeking:
Real legal reasoning, not law-adjacent exposure.
A global perspective admissions committees don't often see.
Interview material and work product that stand up to questioning.
An honest answer to "is this for me?"

"Pre-med students can volunteer in a hospital. Pre-law students have nowhere to go, until now. We built the program we wished existed: three weeks doing the actual work of a first-year law student, on a real case, in the most instructive legal system in the world."
